Perhaps you have long wanted to become a marriage celebrant, or you have completed Marriage Celebrant Essentials and are ready to explore the deeper ceremonial dimensions of this mahi. Did you start with other papers and still need Ceremony and Celebration to complete your qualification?
Ceremony and Celebration offers a realistic and inspiring exploration into professional celebrancy. The course covers a wide range of contemporary ceremonies and builds some core skills required for practice as a professional celebrant. It is recommended as the first course in the Certificate in Celebrant Studies (although other entry points are possible to fit your schedule).
You will:

Learn a practical framework for planning and designing ceremonies for births, deaths, marriages, and other significant life events

Delivery
The programme is delivered fully via Zoom. We have created an engaging online learning experience that keeps participants connected, active, and involved. Māori Language for Ceremonies: He Karanga ki te Reo Māori
Two Zooms: Wednesdays 21 & 28 October 2026; 7.30-8.30pmThis popular ceremony-specific training is designed for celebrants who want to use te reo Māori in their ceremonies, but are still beginners with the language. The workshop is practical and aims to improve pronunciation and help you feel more confident, competent, and culturally grounded when using te reo Māori.
Our facilitator, Karen Tangaere (Ngāti Porou), who is both celebrant and teacher, has been highly endorsed by previous workshop participants for creating such a supportive, encouraging learning environment that gently reduces fear, builds understanding, and supports accurate pronunciation and respectful use of te reo Māori in ceremonial contexts.
In this workshop you will:
- Explore opportunities to incorporate te reo Māori into your ceremonies
- Practise pronunciation of the Māori words you already use (or want to use)
- Rehearse greetings, commonly used phrases, and blessings relevant to various ceremonies
- Identify common barriers to using te reo Māori — and learn practical ways to move through yours
You will have time to ask questions, voice concerns, request specific content, and most importantly, practise aloud.
The workshop is delivered over two sessions, allowing space to embed learning and build real confidence in your language use.
If you miss a session, a recording or written resources will be provided — though nothing replaces the value of live practice.

Marriage Celebrant Essentials – Sept
starting Tuesday 29th September 2026Get your professional celebrant training underway with the next MCE prior to wedding season kicking off. This popular course fills quickly and is an ideal short course for aspiring marriage celebrants. It provides all the essentials and ensures a thorough knowledge of the legalities imposed by the Marriage Act and recent changes affecting celebrants. You will be well set up for applying to be appointed by BDM, and for dealing with the tricky legal questions that invariably arise in a public role. You will learn about designing ceremonies at the simpler end of the spectrum.

Polish Your Practice (Prof Practice – Pt 2)
starting Monday 21 September 2026Prerequisite: This paper is one of the two short courses that make up our Professional Practice strand. It is typically completed last in your CertCelSts qualification, but may be taken prior to Pt 1 – Building Your Brand. Please contact the Director if you are uncertain about your eligibility.
Polish Your Practice consolidates your learning across the four quadrants of professional celebrant practice to refine your craft. It focuses on strengthening client engagement for more complex ceremonies, deepening your understanding of ceremonial purpose, and advancing your capability in working with diversity, difference, and sensitive contexts.
In addition, we examine emerging sector issues, including the role of technology and artificial intelligence in contemporary celebrancy. Participants may request specialist topics of interest, allowing the cohort’s needs to shape elements of the curriculum.
The course is delivered over four Zoom sessions, held weekly, 7.00pm-9.30pm (NZT) on these dates:

Sessions combine discussion, case studies, skill-building exercises, ceremony delivery, and facilitated peer reflection. If you are aiming to graduate this year, please note this is the final opportunity to complete this paper in 2026.

You will be well set up for applying or renewing your appointment with BDM, and dealing with the tricky legal questions that invariably arise in a public role. You will learn about designing ceremonies at the simpler end of the spectrum and practical tips to build your confidence.

This is the final MCE for the year and will sit well alongside the first Ceremony and Celebration course for 2027 for those wanting a strong foundation to their celebrancy.
You are encouraged to enrol before 6 October to access the earlybird rate, after which the standard course fee of $425 applies. Saving a few dollars always helps, but the main reason to enrol early is that this course often sells out so it is advisable to secure your place. To enable smooth processing of enrolments and adequate time for pre-course student preparation, we require enrolments at least one week before course commencement. Enrolments after this date incur an admin surcharge.

Starting Tues 18th August 2026 in weekly evening sessionsThis in-depth course is designed for those seeking to become fully trained, professional marriage and civil union celebrants offering bespoke, personalised ceremonies.
Building on the foundation of our Marriage Celebrant Essentials (MCE) course, this MCM course assumes a strong working knowledge of the legal responsibilities outlined in the Marriage Act and Civil Union Act.*
You’ll explore the full design process and a broad range of creative elements that can be woven into modern ceremonies of commitment. Through practical, hands-on learning, the course covers:
