It ensures a thorough knowledge of the legalities imposed by the Marriage Act and recent changes affecting celebrants. You will be well set up for applying or renewing your appointment with BDM, and dealing with the tricky legal questions that invariably arise in this public role. You will learn about designing ceremonies at the simpler end of the spectrum.
For those wanting to maximise their exposure to all things ceremonial, this course can be taken along with the Ceremony and Celebration course (which is over two June weekends). Although it will be a intensive deep-dive, if you have time availability, this would really get you off to a racing start with your celebrancy.

Ceremony and Celebration – Starting soon so Enrol Today
10/11 & 17/18 June 2023 (online in weekends)Are you wondering what a celebrant does, what makes a good ceremony, or how to become a celebrant? This course gives a realistic preview of the role and starts to build essential skills. It is recommended as the first course to undertake for the Certificate in Celebrant Studies (although other entry points are possible). You will gain a firm understanding of the nature of ceremony and ritual and the role of the celebrant in Aotearoa-New Zealand, build essential writing and delivery skills, and receive a framework for the planning and design of a broad range of contemporary ceremonies.

MCE ensures a thorough knowledge of the legalities imposed by the Marriage Act and recent changes affecting celebrants. You will be well set up for applying or renewing your appointment with BDM, and dealing with the tricky legal questions that invariably arise in a public role. You will learn about designing ceremonies at the simpler end of the spectrum.
This course will flow on to Marriage Celebrant Mastery for those interested in offering bespoke personalised marriage ceremonies. An alternative is to do the Ceremony and Celebration course next, which provides a thorough foundation for working as a celebrant and opens possibilities for offering a wider range of ceremonies.
To enable smooth processing of enrolments and adequate time for pre-course student preparation, we prefer enrolments at least one week before course commencement. Enrolments after this date incur a 10% surcharge.
Those interested in crafting fully-personalised marriage ceremonies will be invited to continue into our more advanced module Marriage Celebrant Mastery later in the year.

Funeral Celebrant Course
starting Wednesday 20th September - an online combination of evening and weekend sessionsThis course is designed for those who wish to become funeral celebrants and be competent to design and lead ceremonies for funerals and memorials. It also provides an opportunity for continuing education for experienced funeral celebrants to explore new dimensions in their work, and other practising celebrants who decide they are ready to move into this area. This course will be delivered entirely by Zoom, which has the benefit of increasing the capacity of students to incorporate such technologies in their ceremonial kete.

Marriage Celebrant Mastery
24 August - 21 September 2023 in weekly evening sessionsThis course is for those who wish to be fully trained as professional marriage and civil union celebrants. It builds upon our prerequisite Marriage Celebrant Essentials (MCE) course and therefore assumes a thorough working knowledge of the legalities imposed by the Marriage Act and the Civil Union Act.* We will explore the full design process and a spectrum of creative enactments that can be incorporated into contemporary ceremonies of commitment. You will delve into interviewing, vow coaching and rehearsals, as well as how to enhance both your ceremony writing and delivery.
The course is delivered in 5 evening sessions 7.00pm – 9.30pm
*Note: Practising celebrants who have already conducted 5+ ceremonies may apply to the TCS Director for direct entry into this course (although if interested in the differentiation and offering of registry and registry-style ceremonies, MCE is still recommended as a pre-requisite)

This Professional Practice course will be in a series of 5 Tuesday Zoom evenings and 1 Sunday (online or in-person to be decided by participants)
All Zoom sessions 7.00pm-9.30pm although weekend class time, currently 9.30-4.00pm may vary depending on the number of students enrolled.
